Editor: Backing up emails can be a cumbersome task, and the results are often not very user friendly nor easily accessible. These are the reasons that Mbox2xml was created.
We thought an Email Backup tool should have the following properties:
Easy to use.
The backups should be easily accessible, both for humans and computer programs.
The tool should allow for automation, since it involves a backup task.
So it was decided that the program should store the emails in XML format which, together with a provided stylesheet, can be viewed in any Modern webbrowser, no matter where the backup is stored. Also, XML is easily imported by a growing number of applications. And if the tool was not only usable through a graphical user interface, but also from the command line, it could more easily be integrated in existing backup tasks.
Mbox2xml has the following features:
Extracts emails, including attachments, from one or more MBox files and stores them in an XML file and attachment directory respectively.
Can generate an XSL stylesheet which transforms the XML into an easy to use WebPage, which allows you to sort and browse the messages by date and thread.
Contains both a commandline version and one with a graphical user interface.
Emails can be exported for a given date range.
Many other options can be specified both at the commandline or through the graphical user interface.
